Pharm-D Health Science is honoured to have been part of the 9th Hospital Sultan Idris Shah Serdang (HSIS) Pharmacy Conference 2024. This year, the Conference’s theme is “Bridging the Gap in Paediatric Pharmaceutical Care”.
Ahead of the Conference, we facilitated an Extemporaneous Preparation Hands-On Workshop, featuring compounding experience using X-Temp® Oral Suspension System. Participants had the opportunity to prepare extemporaneously for two different oral liquid suspension medications using this compounding vehicle.
During the session, as rightly pointed out by Puan Subasyini Sivasupramaniam, Organising Chairperson of the Conference and Head of the Clinical Pharmacy Unit (Paediatric) of HSIS, pharmaceutical compounding is an essential yet increasingly overlooked skill, especially in paediatric care, because for young children, accurate dosing and palatability are essential for medication compliance.
Alongside esteemed speakers of the session were Senior Pharmacist Ms Siti Hawa Azman of Hospital Tunku Azizah Kuala Lumpur, who gave an enlightening session on Good Dispensing Practice for Extemporaneous Medications, and Senior Pharmacist Ms Lavannya Muniandy of Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Klang on Good Manufacturing Practice.
Various medications used for young children lack paediatric authorization and thus rely on extemporaneous compounding for customised dosage and enhanced palatability.
It’s time to bring stronger attention to this essential pharmaceutical practice to ensure our youngest patients receive the precise, tailored care they deserve.
